About Alex Doley

I am a Registered Counselling Therapist - Candidate (RCT-C) from Acadia University, working with adult clients. When I'm outside the clinic, I work as a Primary Care Paramedic in Halifax.  Emergency medicine reminds me that there is something new to learn no matter what I encounter, and I believe that sentiment holds in counselling. Clients and colleagues are an extraordinary wellspring of knowledge to behold.

My approach to therapy comes from the field of contextual behavioural science, specifically Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. What attracted me to this approach is its flexibility. ACT is evidence-based and effective in treating anxiety, depression, OCD, Chronic Pain, Substance use, Psychosis and Trauma-Related Issues. The goal of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is to increase psychological flexibility. In a session, we describe, evaluate, and problem-solve to help raise awareness and understand the choices ahead of us. Along with ACT, I incorporate a range of modalities into my work.  Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and Narrative Therapy.

The word "change" is used often in counselling, but I think it is helpful to consider other metaphors, including "shifts," "movement," or "growth. In therapy, the change may be subtle; sometimes, quite remarkable.

Ultimately, these shifts move us further along the path towards wellness. If you have any questions about the credentials I hold or modalities I use, please ask, as it is your right as a client to be informed about treatment and service.
